๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Prepositions: The Little Words That Show WHERE, WHEN & HOW Things Move!

Imagine you have a magic GPS that tells exactly where things are, when things happen, and how things move. Thatโ€™s what prepositions do!

๐ŸŽฏ The Big Picture

Prepositions are tiny helper words that connect things together. They answer three big questions:

  1. WHERE is something? (on the table, under the bed)
  2. WHEN does something happen? (at noon, in summer)
  3. HOW does something move? (through the tunnel, across the bridge)

Think of prepositions as BRIDGES ๐ŸŒ‰ between words. They connect a noun to the rest of the sentence!

๐Ÿ“ Prepositions of PLACE โ€” Where Is It?

These prepositions tell us the location of something.

The Three Main Ones: IN, ON, AT

Preposition Think of it asโ€ฆ Example
IN Inside a box ๐Ÿ“ฆ The cat is in the basket.
ON Touching a surface ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ The book is on the table.
AT A specific point ๐Ÿ“ Meet me at the bus stop.

๐ŸŽช The Location Family

ABOVE โ†’ higher than โ˜๏ธ
"The bird flies above the trees."

BELOW โ†’ lower than ๐ŸŒŠ
  "Fish swim below the surface."

BETWEEN โ†’ in the middle of two ๐Ÿฅช
"I sit between my mom and dad."

BEHIND โ†’ at the back ๐Ÿ”™
"The dog hides behind the sofa."

IN FRONT OF โ†’ at the front ๐Ÿ”œ
"The teacher stands in front of the class."

NEXT TO / BESIDE โ†’ at the side โ†”๏ธ
"My house is next to the park."

NEAR โ†’ close to (but not touching)
"The store is near the school."

๐Ÿง  Memory Trick

  • IN = you can go INSIDE it (in the room, in the box, in the water)
  • ON = you can stand ON TOP of it (on the floor, on the grass, on the roof)
  • AT = you can point AT it (at the corner, at the door, at the station)

โฐ Prepositions of TIME โ€” When Does It Happen?

These prepositions tell us WHEN something happens.

The Three Time Friends: IN, ON, AT

Preposition Use it forโ€ฆ Example
AT Exact times โฐ Class starts at 9 oโ€™clock.
ON Days & dates ๐Ÿ“… My birthday is on Monday.
IN Longer periods ๐Ÿ“† We go swimming in summer.

โณ The Time Family

BEFORE โ†’ earlier than โช
  "Wash your hands before dinner."

AFTER โ†’ later than โฉ
  "We play after school."

DURING โ†’ while something happens ๐Ÿ”„
  "Don't talk during the movie."

UNTIL / TILL โ†’ up to a point โธ๏ธ
  "Wait until I come back."

FOR โ†’ how long ๐Ÿ“
  "I studied for two hours."

SINCE โ†’ from a starting point ๐Ÿ“
  "I've lived here since 2020."

BY โ†’ not later than โšก
"Finish your homework by 8 PM."

๐ŸŽฏ Quick Rule

  • AT = clock times, meals, night, weekend (at 3 PM, at lunch, at night)
  • ON = days, dates, specific days (on Friday, on July 4th, on my birthday)
  • IN = months, years, seasons, centuries (in March, in 2024, in winter)

๐Ÿƒ Prepositions of MOVEMENT โ€” How Does It Move?

These prepositions show direction โ€” where something is GOING!

๐Ÿš€ The Movement Gang

graph TD A["START"] --> B["TO = toward a destination ๐ŸŽฏ"] A --> C["INTO = entering inside ๐Ÿ“ฅ"] A --> D["OUT OF = exiting from ๐Ÿ“ค"] A --> E["THROUGH = passing inside ๐Ÿš‡"] A --> F["ACROSS = going from one side to the other โžก๏ธ"] A --> G["ALONG = following a path ๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ"] A --> H["OVER = above and across โฌ†๏ธ"] A --> I["UNDER = beneath and through โฌ‡๏ธ"]

๐Ÿ“ Examples That Make Sense

Preposition Picture It! Example
TO Arrow pointing โ†’ She walked to the store.
INTO Going inside a door ๐Ÿšช The rabbit jumped into the hat.
OUT OF Coming outside ๐Ÿ โžก๏ธ He ran out of the house.
THROUGH Moving inside something long ๐Ÿš‡ We drove through the tunnel.
ACROSS Crossing from edge to edge ๐ŸŒŠ She swam across the river.
ALONG Following beside ๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ They walked along the beach.
OVER Up and across โ›ฐ๏ธ The plane flew over the mountains.
UNDER Down and through ๐ŸŒ‰ The boat sailed under the bridge.

๐Ÿ’ก TO vs INTO โ€” Whatโ€™s the Difference?

  • TO = you arrive at a place (I went to school)
  • INTO = you enter inside something (I went into the classroom)

๐Ÿงฉ Complex Prepositions โ€” The Power Combos!

Sometimes we need MORE than one word to show a relationship. These are complex prepositions (also called compound prepositions).

๐Ÿ”ง Common Complex Prepositions

Complex Preposition Meaning Example
according to as said by According to the news, it will rain.
because of the reason why School closed because of the storm.
in front of at the front Stand in front of the mirror.
instead of in place of Iโ€™ll have juice instead of soda.
in spite of even though He won in spite of his injury.
on top of above, on The cherry is on top of the cake.
next to beside Sit next to me.
apart from except for Apart from math, I love all subjects.
due to because of The delay is due to traffic.
along with together with I came along with my sister.

๐ŸŽช Think of Them as TEAM WORDS

These words ALWAYS work together. You canโ€™t split them up!

โœ… โ€œI sat in front of the TV.โ€ โŒ โ€œI sat in of front the TV.โ€ (WRONG!)

๐ŸŽญ Prepositional Phrases โ€” Prepositions + Friends

A prepositional phrase = Preposition + Noun (or Pronoun)

Itโ€™s like a mini sentence inside your sentence!

๐Ÿ” Anatomy of a Prepositional Phrase

[Preposition] + [Object] = Prepositional Phrase

on + the table = ON THE TABLE
in + the morning = IN THE MORNING
with + my friends = WITH MY FRIENDS

๐Ÿ“š Examples in Action

Prepositional Phrase Used in a Sentence
in the garden The flowers bloom in the garden.
after the rain Rainbows appear after the rain.
with a smile She greeted me with a smile.
under the sea Fish live under the sea.
for my birthday I got a bike for my birthday.

๐Ÿ’ก Find the Phrase!

Look for the preposition, then find what comes after it until the next verb or subject. Thatโ€™s your prepositional phrase!

โ€œThe cat under the bed is sleeping.โ€

Preposition: under Object: the bed Prepositional Phrase: under the bed

๐Ÿ”— Dependent Prepositions โ€” Words That Need Partners

Some verbs, adjectives, and nouns ALWAYS need a specific preposition. Theyโ€™re best friends!

๐Ÿค Verbs + Their Preposition Partners

Verb + Preposition Example
listen to I listen to music every day.
wait for Please wait for me!
depend on It depends on the weather.
believe in I believe in magic.
think about Iโ€™m thinking about lunch.
look at/for Look at this! / Look for your keys.
belong to This book belongs to Sara.
apologize for He apologized for being late.

๐Ÿ’Ž Adjectives + Their Preposition Partners

Adjective + Preposition Example
good at Sheโ€™s good at drawing.
afraid of Donโ€™t be afraid of the dark.
interested in Iโ€™m interested in science.
proud of Mom is proud of me.
different from This is different from that.
responsible for Youโ€™re responsible for your pet.
similar to Your bag is similar to mine.

๐ŸŽฏ Nouns + Their Preposition Partners

Noun + Preposition Example
reason for Whatโ€™s the reason for the delay?
answer to I know the answer to this question.
solution to We found a solution to the problem.
increase in Thereโ€™s an increase in prices.
effect on Music has an effect on mood.

โš ๏ธ Warning!

These are NOT interchangeable! You MUST memorize which preposition goes with which word.

โŒ โ€œIโ€™m good in drawing.โ€ (WRONG!) โœ… โ€œIโ€™m good at drawing.โ€ (CORRECT!)

๐ŸŽค Prepositions at the End โ€” Breaking the โ€œRuleโ€!

Old grammar books said: โ€œNever end a sentence with a preposition!โ€

But in modern English, itโ€™s totally okay โ€” and often sounds MORE natural!

๐Ÿ†š Formal vs Natural

Formal (old-fashioned) Natural (modern)
To whom are you speaking? Who are you speaking to?
About what are you thinking? What are you thinking about?
In which house do you live? Which house do you live in?

โœ… When Itโ€™s Perfect to End with a Preposition

1. Questions starting with question words:

  • What are you looking for?
  • Where did you come from?
  • Who should I give this to?

2. Relative clauses:

  • This is the book I was talking about.
  • Thatโ€™s the chair youโ€™re sitting on.
  • Heโ€™s someone I can depend on.

3. Passive sentences:

  • The baby needs to be looked after.
  • This topic has been talked about.
  • The room was broken into.

๐ŸŽฏ The Golden Rule

If ending with a preposition sounds natural and clear, DO IT!

If it sounds awkward, rearrange the sentence.

Natural: โ€œWhat are you waiting for?โ€ Awkward: โ€œFor what are you waiting?โ€

๐ŸŒŸ Quick Summary โ€” Your Preposition Cheat Code!

Type Purpose Examples
Place WHERE something is in, on, at, under, above
Time WHEN something happens at, on, in, before, after
Movement HOW something moves to, into, through, across
Complex Multi-word relationships because of, in front of
Phrases Prep + object groups in the morning, with joy
Dependent Fixed word partnerships good at, listen to
At End Natural sentence endings What for? Where from?

๐ŸŽฎ Remember This!

Prepositions are like GPS coordinates for your sentences. They tell us:

  • ๐Ÿ“ WHERE โ†’ The Location
  • โฐ WHEN โ†’ The Timing
  • ๐Ÿƒ HOW โ†’ The Direction

Master these little words, and your English will be crystal clear!

โ€œPrepositions may be small, but theyโ€™re the glue that holds sentences together!โ€ ๐Ÿงฉโœจ
