Set Pieces: Corners and Free Kicks ⚽

The Magic Moments That Win Games!

Imagine you’re at a birthday party. The piñata is hung up, and everyone gets a free swing at it. That’s exactly what set pieces are in soccer — special free chances to score when the game pauses just for you!

🎯 What Are Set Pieces?

Think of set pieces like getting a “time out” present in a game. The ball stops. Everyone waits. And YOUR team gets to plan the perfect play!

Two main types we’ll explore:

  • Corner Kicks — When the ball goes out by the goal (kicked out by the defending team)
  • Free Kicks — When someone breaks the rules and your team gets a free shot

🏴 Corner Kick Execution

What Is It?

When the other team kicks the ball past their own goal line, YOUR team gets to kick from the corner of the field. It’s like getting a bonus turn in a board game!

The Corner Arc

See that little curved line in each corner? That’s where the ball MUST be placed. It’s like standing in a special circle to make a wish!

How To Execute A Corner Kick

Step 1: Ball Placement

  • Place the ball inside the corner arc
  • The ball cannot move outside this curve

Step 2: Signal Your Teammates

  • Raise your hand (short corner)
  • Point to the goal (far post)
  • Wave low (near post)

Step 3: The Delivery

  • Inswinger: Ball curves TOWARD the goal 🎯
  • Outswinger: Ball curves AWAY from the goal

Simple Example:

Imagine throwing a frisbee. You can make it curve left OR curve right. Corner kicks work the same way — you spin the ball to make it bend!

INSWINGER (Right-footed from left corner):
   ___________
  | 🥅 |
  | ←←←←←←←←⚽ (curves IN toward goal)
  |___________|
        [Corner]

🎨 Corner Kick Variations

Just like ice cream comes in many flavors, corner kicks have different styles!

1. Near Post Corner

What: Ball goes to the closest goalpost Why: Quick flick headers, catches the goalkeeper off guard Example: Player runs to near post, flicks the ball with their head into the net!

2. Far Post Corner

What: Ball floats to the farthest goalpost Why: More time for players to jump, harder for goalkeeper to reach Example: Tall player at back post heads it down into the goal!

3. Short Corner

What: Pass to a nearby teammate instead of kicking directly Why: Creates a better angle, confuses defenders Example: Two players pass back and forth, then cross it in!

4. Driven Corner

What: Fast, low ball along the ground Why: Hard to defend, quick shots possible Example: Ball zips across the box, player shoots first-time!

⚡ Direct Free Kick

What Makes It “Direct”?

You can score DIRECTLY from this kick — no one else needs to touch the ball! It’s like getting a golden ticket straight to the goal!

When Do You Get One?

When someone commits a “serious foul” like:

  • Kicking, tripping, or pushing you
  • Holding your shirt
  • Handball (touching the ball with hands/arms)

The Setup

The Kicker:

  • Places ball at the exact spot of the foul
  • Takes steps back
  • Picks a target: over the wall or around it

The Shooter’s Choices:

Technique How It Works Best For
Power Shot Hit hard, low Close range
Curving Shot Bend around wall Medium range
Dipping Shot Up then down fast Over the wall
Knuckleball Wobbles unpredictably Confusing goalkeepers

Famous Example:

Think of a banana. Now imagine kicking a ball so it CURVES like a banana around a wall of players and into the goal! That’s a curving free kick!

CURVING FREE KICK:
        🥅 Goalkeeper
    [Wall of Players]
         ⚽→→→↗️
              ↘️→→→ GOAL!

🤝 Indirect Free Kick

The Key Difference

You CANNOT score directly! Someone else MUST touch the ball first. It’s like playing “telephone” — the message has to pass through at least one more person!

When Do You Get One?

For “less serious” rule breaks:

  • Goalkeeper holds ball too long (6 seconds!)
  • Dangerous play (high kicks near faces)
  • Blocking the goalkeeper
  • Offside

How The Referee Shows It

The referee raises their arm STRAIGHT UP and keeps it there until someone else touches the ball!

Simple Play Example:

INDIRECT FREE KICK:

Player A → taps ball → Player B → SHOOTS!
   ⚽ → ⚽ → 🥅

(Two touches minimum before goal counts!)

Pro Tip:

Even a tiny touch counts! Some teams barely tap the ball, then the second player BLASTS it toward goal!

🧱 Free Kick Wall

What Is The Wall?

It’s a line of defenders standing together like a human shield! They’re trying to block your free kick!

The Rules

Distance: The wall must stand 9.15 meters (10 yards) from the ball

Fun Fact: That’s about the length of a school bus!

Wall Formation

Position Player’s Job
End Players Block the corners
Middle Players Protect the center
Jumpers Block high shots
Duckers Block low shots

The Goalkeeper’s Role

The goalkeeper positions themselves to see the ball AND cover the side of the goal the wall doesn’t protect!

WALL SETUP (Goalkeeper's View):

       🥅 GOAL 🥅
    GK ← Covers this side

[🧍🧍🧍🧍] ← Wall covers this side

         ⚽ (Free kick spot)

Smart Attacking Tricks:

  1. Over the Wall: Chip the ball high, dip it down
  2. Around the Wall: Curve it to the open side
  3. Through the Wall: If someone jumps, go under!
  4. Fake and Pass: Pretend to shoot, pass to teammate

Defending Tips:

  • One brave player lies behind the wall (blocks ground shots!)
  • Wall jumps together on whistle
  • Don’t turn your back — watch the ball!

🌟 Putting It All Together

🎮 Remember These Key Points!

  1. Corner Kicks = Ball placed in corner arc, many delivery options
  2. Variations = Near post, far post, short, or driven
  3. Direct Free Kick = Score directly, given for serious fouls
  4. Indirect Free Kick = Two touches needed, given for minor fouls
  5. The Wall = 10 yards away, defenders blocking the goal

💪 You’re Ready!

Now you understand how the most exciting moments in soccer work! These “set pieces” are where games are won and lost.

Remember: Even the best players in the world practice these over and over. It’s not magic — it’s preparation meeting opportunity!

Next time you watch a game and see a corner kick or free kick, you’ll know EXACTLY what’s happening. That’s the power of learning! ⚽🏆
