The LEGO Brick Story

Imagine you have LEGO bricks. Simple sentences are like single LEGO creations - a house, a car, a tree. But what if you want to build a whole city? You need to connect your creations!

In Arabic, we do the same thing with sentences. We take simple sentences and connect them to tell bigger, more interesting stories.

Part 1: Compound Sentences (الجمل المركبة)

What is a Compound Sentence?

A compound sentence is like having two LEGO creations side by side, connected by a bridge. Both creations are equally important!

Simple idea:

• You have TWO complete sentences
• You connect them with a joining word
• Both parts can stand alone

The Magic Connectors (حروف العطف)

Think of these as the bridges between your LEGO creations:

Example 1: Using وَ (and)

Two simple sentences:

1. أَنا أُحِبُّ التُّفَّاح (I love apples)
2. أَنا أُحِبُّ المَوْز (I love bananas)

Compound sentence:

أَنا أُحِبُّ التُّفَّاح وَ أُحِبُّ المَوْز

I love apples and I love bananas

Example 2: Using أَوْ (or)

Two choices:

1. هَل تُريدُ شاي؟ (Do you want tea?)
2. هَل تُريدُ قَهْوَة؟ (Do you want coffee?)

Compound sentence:

هَل تُريدُ شاي أَوْ قَهْوَة؟

Do you want tea or coffee?

Example 3: Using لَكِنْ (but)

Two contrasting ideas:

1. الطَّقْس بارِد (The weather is cold)
2. أَنا سَعيد (I am happy)

Compound sentence:

الطَّقْس بارِد لَكِنْ أَنا سَعيد

The weather is cold but I am happy

Example 4: Using ثُمَّ (then)

Two actions in order:

1. أَكَلْتُ (I ate)
2. شَرِبْتُ (I drank)

Compound sentence:

أَكَلْتُ ثُمَّ شَرِبْتُ

I ate then I drank

Example 5: Using فَ (so/then)

Cause and quick result:

1. جاءَ المُعَلِّم (The teacher came)
2. وَقَفَ الطُّلاب (The students stood)

Compound sentence:

جاءَ المُعَلِّم فَوَقَفَ الطُّلاب

The teacher came so the students stood

Part 2: Complex Sentences (الجمل المعقدة)

What is a Complex Sentence?

A complex sentence is like having a main LEGO castle with smaller towers attached. The castle is the BOSS. The towers just add extra details!

Simple idea:

• You have ONE main sentence (the boss)
• You add ONE dependent part (the helper)
• The helper CANNOT stand alone

The Magic Starters (أدوات الربط)

These words START the helper part:

Example 1: Using لِأَنَّ (because)

Main sentence: أَنا سَعيد (I am happy) Helper: أَنتَ هُنا (you are here)

Complex sentence:

أَنا سَعيد لِأَنَّكَ هُنا

I am happy because you are here

🏰 Castle: “I am happy” (can stand alone) 🗼 Tower: “because you are here” (needs the castle!)

Example 2: Using إِذا (if)

Main sentence: سَأَذْهَب (I will go) Condition: المَطَر تَوَقَّف (the rain stopped)

Complex sentence:

إِذا تَوَقَّفَ المَطَر، سَأَذْهَب

If the rain stops, I will go

Example 3: Using عِنْدَما (when)

Main sentence: أَفْتَح الباب (I open the door) Time: أَسْمَع الجَرَس (I hear the bell)

Complex sentence:

عِنْدَما أَسْمَعُ الجَرَس، أَفْتَحُ الباب

When I hear the bell, I open the door

Example 4: Using الَّذي/الَّتي (who/which)

Main sentence: رَأَيْتُ الوَلَد (I saw the boy) Description: يَلْعَب (he plays)

Complex sentence:

رَأَيْتُ الوَلَد الَّذي يَلْعَب

I saw the boy who plays

🏰 Castle: “I saw the boy” 🗼 Tower: “who plays” (tells us WHICH boy)

For feminine:

رَأَيْتُ البِنْت الَّتي تَلْعَب

I saw the girl who plays

Example 5: Using حَتَّى (until/so that)

Main sentence: أَدْرُس (I study) Purpose: أَنْجَح (I succeed)

Complex sentence:

أَدْرُسُ حَتَّى أَنْجَح

I study so that I succeed

Example 6: Using بَيْنَما (while)

Main sentence: كُنْتُ أَقْرَأ (I was reading) Same time: أَخي يَنام (my brother sleeps)

Complex sentence:

بَيْنَما كُنْتُ أَقْرَأ، كانَ أَخي يَنام

While I was reading, my brother was sleeping

• Both can live alone
• Connected by a bridge
• Example: “I ate and I slept”

Complex = PARENT + CHILD 👨‍👦

• Parent (main) stands alone
• Child (helper) needs parent
• Example: “I ate because I was hungry”

Real-Life Practice Sentences

Compound Sentences:

1. ذَهَبْتُ إِلى المَدْرَسَة وَ رَجَعْتُ إِلى البَيْت

   • I went to school and I returned home

2. هَل تُحِبُّ الصَّيْف أَوْ الشِّتاء؟

   • Do you like summer or winter?

3. أَنا تَعْبان لَكِنْ سَأُكْمِل

   • I am tired but I will continue

Complex Sentences:

1. سَأَنْجَح لِأَنَّني أَدْرُس كَثيراً

   • I will succeed because I study a lot

2. إِذا جاءَ الصَّديق، سَنَلْعَب

   • If the friend comes, we will play

3. أُحِبُّ الكِتاب الَّذي أَعْطَيْتَني

   • I love the book which you gave me

Remember:
