Think of a plain sentence like a black-and-white drawing. Expressions and modifiers are like:

• Exclamations = Splashes of bright color! 💥
• Adverbs = The way you move your brush (fast, slow, gently)
• Expressing Ability = What your brush CAN do
• Expressing Necessity = What your brush MUST do

1️⃣ Exclamations (التعجب - At-Ta’ajjub)

What Are Exclamations?

When you see something amazing and say “WOW!” or “How beautiful!”—that’s an exclamation! Arabic has special patterns to express surprise and wonder.

The Two Magic Formulas

Formula 1: مَا أَفْعَلَهُ (Maa Af’alahu)

Pattern: ما + أَفْعَلَ + noun/pronoun

Example:

• ما أَجْمَلَ السَّماءَ! (Maa ajmala as-samaa’a!)
• “How beautiful the sky is!”

Think of it like saying: “WHAT makes the sky SO beautiful!”

Formula 2: أَفْعِلْ بِهِ (Af’il bihi)

Pattern: أَفْعِلْ + بِ + noun/pronoun

More Exclamation Examples

The word after ما أَفْعَلَ is always in the accusative case (منصوب)—it ends with a fatḥa (ـَ) or ـًا.

2️⃣ Adverbs (الظُّروف - Adh-Dhuroof)

What Are Adverbs?

Adverbs are like the “how,” “when,” and “where” helpers. They tell us MORE about the action!

Types of Adverbs

⏰ Adverbs of Time (ظرف الزمان)

These answer: WHEN did it happen?

Example:

سَأَذْهَبُ غَداً (Sa-adh’habu ghadan) “I will go tomorrow.”

📍 Adverbs of Place (ظرف المكان)

These answer: WHERE did it happen?

Example:

الكِتابُ فَوْقَ الطَّاوِلَةِ (Al-kitaabu fawqa at-taawilati) “The book is on/above the table.”

🎯 Adverbs of Manner (حال)

These answer: HOW did it happen?

Example:

يَمْشي بَطيئاً (Yamshi batee’an) “He walks slowly.”

Most adverbs end with ـاً (tanween fatha) because they are in the accusative case!

3️⃣ Expressing Ability (التعبير عن القدرة)

The Superpower Words!

When you want to say “I CAN” or “I’m ABLE to,” Arabic has special tools!

Key Ability Words

يَسْتَطيعُ (Yastati’u) - “Can/Is able to”

This is like your main superpower verb!

Example:

أَسْتَطيعُ أَنْ أَتَكَلَّمَ العَرَبِيَّةَ (Astatee’u an atakallama al-'arabiyyata) “I can speak Arabic.”

يَقْدِرُ (Yaqdiru) - “Can/Is capable of”

Another superpower word, slightly more formal!

Example:

هَلْ تَقْدِرُ أَنْ تُساعِدَني؟ (Hal taqdiru an tusaa’idani?) “Can you help me?”

قادِرٌ عَلى (Qaadirun 'alaa) - “Capable of”

This is an adjective pattern!

Example:

أَنا قادِرٌ عَلى الفَهْمِ (Ana qaadirun 'alal-fahmi) “I am capable of understanding.”

Negative Ability: “Cannot”

Just add لا before the verb!

لا أَسْتَطيعُ أَنْ أَنامَ (Laa astatee’u an anaama) “I cannot sleep.”

4️⃣ Expressing Necessity (التعبير عن الضرورة)

The “Must Do” Words!

When something is super important and you HAVE to do it—Arabic has powerful words for that!

Key Necessity Words

يَجِبُ أَنْ (Yajibu an) - “Must/Have to”

The strongest necessity word! Like a teacher saying “YOU MUST!”

Example:

يَجِبُ أَنْ تَدْرُسَ (Yajibu an tadrusa) “You must study.”

يَنْبَغي أَنْ (Yanbaghi an) - “Should/Ought to”

Softer than يَجِبُ—like a gentle reminder.

Example:

يَنْبَغي أَنْ تَنامَ مُبَكِّراً (Yanbaghi an tanaama mubakkiran) “You should sleep early.”

عَلى (+ pronoun) أَنْ ('Alaa … an) - “Must/Has to”

Personal obligation—attached to YOU!

Example:

عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تَحْتَرِمَ والِدَيْكَ ('Alayka an tahtarima waalidayka) “You must respect your parents.”

لا بُدَّ أَنْ (Laa budda an) - “There’s no escape but to”

Very strong necessity! Like “there’s absolutely no other way!”

Example:

لا بُدَّ أَنْ أُنْهِيَ العَمَلَ (Laa budda an unhiya al-'amala) “I absolutely must finish the work.”

مِنَ الضَّروري أَنْ (Mina ad-daroori an) - “It’s necessary that”

Formal way to express necessity.

Example:

مِنَ الضَّروري أَنْ نَتَعَلَّمَ (Mina ad-daroori an nata’allama) “It’s necessary that we learn.”
