๐ญ Arabic Verb Moods: The Magic Commands of Language
The Story of the Verb Commander
Imagine you have a magic remote control for people. With different buttons, you can:
- Tell someone to DO something (Go! Run! Eat!)
- Tell someone NOT to do something (Donโt go! Donโt run!)
- Talk about things that MIGHT happen (If you goโฆ Maybe you eatโฆ)
- Talk about what you WANT or EXPECT (I want you to goโฆ)
In Arabic, these โbuttonsโ are called Verb Moods. Each mood changes the verbโs ending to show what kind of command or situation youโre talking about!
๐ฏ What Are Verb Moods?
Think of moods as the attitude of your verb. Just like your face shows if youโre happy, sad, or serious, Arabic verbs change their endings to show their โattitude.โ
| Mood | What It Does | Like Sayingโฆ |
|---|---|---|
| Imperative | Direct command | โDo it!โ |
| Negative Command | Forbidding | โDonโt do it!โ |
| Jussive | Shortened verb | โIf you doโฆโ |
| Subjunctive | After certain words | โI want you toโฆโ |
1๏ธโฃ The Imperative Mood (ุตูุบุฉ ุงูุฃู ุฑ)
๐ฌ The Boss Button
The Imperative is your โboss button.โ You press it to tell someone directly: DO THIS!
How It Works
Start with a present tense verb, then transform it:
ููููุชูุจู (he writes) โ ุงูููุชูุจู (Write!)
ููุฐูููุจู (he goes) โ ุงูุฐูููุจู (Go!)
ููููุฑูุฃู (he reads) โ ุงูููุฑูุฃู (Read!)
The Magic Formula
- Take the present tense verb
- Remove the prefix (ููู / ุชูู)
- Add a helping vowel at the start if needed
- Make the last letter sukun (no vowel)
Examples for Different People
| Who? | โWrite!โ | โGo!โ |
|---|---|---|
| You (ู ) | ุงูููุชูุจู | ุงูุฐูููุจู |
| You (ู) | ุงูููุชูุจูู | ุงูุฐูููุจูู |
| You both | ุงูููุชูุจูุง | ุงูุฐูููุจูุง |
| You all (ู ) | ุงูููุชูุจููุง | ุงูุฐูููุจููุง |
| You all (ู) | ุงูููุชูุจููู | ุงูุฐูููุจููู |
Real Life Examples
- ๐ ุงูููุฑูุฃู ุงูููุชูุงุจู โ Read the book!
- ๐ถ ุงูุฐูููุจู ุฅูููู ุงูู ูุฏูุฑูุณูุฉู โ Go to school!
- โ๏ธ ุงูููุชูุจู ุงุณูู ููู โ Write your name!
2๏ธโฃ Negative Commands (ุงูููู)
๐ซ The โDonโtโ Button
Now imagine the opposite button. Instead of โDO IT,โ you say โDONโT DO IT!โ
In Arabic, we use ููุง + jussive form of the verb.
The Simple Pattern
ููุง + jussive verb = Don't do it!
Examples
| Positive Command | Negative Command |
|---|---|
| ุงูููุชูุจู (Write!) | ููุง ุชูููุชูุจู (Donโt write!) |
| ุงูุฐูููุจู (Go!) | ููุง ุชูุฐูููุจู (Donโt go!) |
| ุงูููุฑูุฃู (Read!) | ููุง ุชูููุฑูุฃู (Donโt read!) |
Notice the Difference!
- Positive command: No prefix, starts with helping vowel
- Negative command: Uses ุชูู prefix + ููุง
Real Life Examples
- ๐ ููุง ุชูุชููููููู ู โ Donโt talk!
- ๐ด ููุง ุชูููู ู โ Donโt sleep!

3๏ธโฃ The Jussive Mood (ุงูู ุฌุฒูู )
โ๏ธ The Shortening Button
The Jussive is like a scissors button. It cuts off the ending of the verb!
When Do We Use It?
After these special words:
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ููู ู | did not | ููู ู ููููุชูุจู (he didnโt write) |
| ููู ููุง | not yet | ููู ููุง ููููุชูุจู (he hasnโt written yet) |

| ุฅููู | if | ุฅููู ุชูููุชูุจู (if you write) |
How It Changes the Verb
The jussive โcutsโ the ending:
ููููุชูุจู (he writes) โ ููููุชูุจู (cut the ู)
ุชูุฐูููุจู (you go) โ ุชูุฐูููุจู (cut the ู)
