๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Arabic Verb Tenses: Your Time Machine Adventure!

Imagine you have a magical time machine. With just one button, you can travel to yesterday, today, or tomorrow.

Arabic verbs work exactly like this time machine! They change their shape to tell us when something happens.

๐ŸŽฏ The Big Picture

In Arabic, every verb has three tenses:

Time Arabic Name Your Time Machine Button
Past ุงู„ู…ุงุถูŠ (al-mฤแธฤซ) โช Yesterday
Present ุงู„ู…ุถุงุฑุน (al-muแธฤriสฟ) โ–ถ๏ธ Right Now
Future ุงู„ู…ุณุชู‚ุจู„ (al-mustaqbal) โฉ Tomorrow

One verb, three time zones! Letโ€™s explore each one.

โช Past Tense (ุงู„ู…ุงุถูŠ)

What is it?

The Past Tense tells us something already happened. Itโ€™s done. Finished. Complete!

Think of it like a photo album. Youโ€™re looking at pictures of things that already happened.

The Magic Pattern

The past tense is the base form of Arabic verbs. Everything starts here!

Example Verb: ูƒูŽุชูŽุจูŽ (kataba) = โ€œhe wroteโ€

Who? Arabic Sounds Like Meaning
He ูƒูŽุชูŽุจูŽ ka-ta-ba He wrote
She ูƒูŽุชูŽุจูŽุชู’ ka-ta-bat She wrote
I ูƒูŽุชูŽุจู’ุชู ka-tab-tu I wrote
You (m) ูƒูŽุชูŽุจู’ุชูŽ ka-tab-ta You wrote
You (f) ูƒูŽุชูŽุจู’ุชู ka-tab-ti You wrote
We ูƒูŽุชูŽุจู’ู†ูŽุง ka-tab-nฤ We wrote
They (m) ูƒูŽุชูŽุจููˆุง ka-ta-bลซ They wrote

๐Ÿ”‘ The Secret

Notice the endings change based on WHO did the action!

  • He โ†’ ends with ู€ูŽ (a sound)
  • She โ†’ adds ุชู’ (t) at the end
  • I โ†’ adds ุชู (tu) at the end

Real-Life Examples

Arabic Meaning When?
ุฃูŽูƒูŽู„ู’ุชู I ate Yesterdayโ€™s lunch
ุฐูŽู‡ูŽุจูŽ He went Last weekโ€™s trip
ู„ูŽุนูุจู’ู†ูŽุง We played Yesterdayโ€™s game

โ–ถ๏ธ Present Tense (ุงู„ู…ุถุงุฑุน)

What is it?

The Present Tense tells us something is happening right now OR something that happens regularly.

Think of it like a live video. Youโ€™re watching things happen in real-time!

The Magic Pattern

To make present tense, we add letters at the BEGINNING of the verb!

Starting from: ูƒูŽุชูŽุจูŽ (kataba) = โ€œhe wroteโ€

Who? Prefix Arabic Sounds Like Meaning
He ูŠู€ ูŠูŽูƒู’ุชูุจู yak-tu-bu He writes
She ุชู€ ุชูŽูƒู’ุชูุจู tak-tu-bu She writes

They (m) ูŠู€ ูŠูŽูƒู’ุชูุจููˆู†ูŽ yak-tu-bลซna They write

๐Ÿ”‘ The Secret Prefixes

Remember this easy pattern:

Prefix Letter Who?
ุฃูŽ (a) I
ู†ูŽ (na) We
ูŠูŽ (ya) He / They
ุชูŽ (ta) She / You

Memory trick: โ€œAna (I) = Aโ€ and โ€œNahnu (We) = Nโ€

ู†ูŽุฏู’ุฑูุณู We study Every evening

โฉ Future Tense (ุงู„ู…ุณุชู‚ุจู„)

What is it?

The Future Tense tells us something will happen later. Tomorrow, next week, or someday!

Think of it like a to-do list. These things havenโ€™t happened yet!

The Magic Pattern

Hereโ€™s the easy part: Future = Present + a magic word!

Just add ุณูŽ (sa) or ุณูŽูˆู’ููŽ (sawfa) before any present tense verb!

Future Marker Meaning Use When
ุณูŽู€ (sa-) will Soon (today, tomorrow)
ุณูŽูˆู’ููŽ (sawfa) will Later (general future)

Examples in Action

Present + ุณูŽู€ = Future Meaning

๐Ÿ”‘ The Secret

ุณูŽู€ (sa-) is like a sticky note. It attaches directly to the verb! ุณูŽูˆู’ููŽ (sawfa) is like a separate word. It stays on its own!
