๐ The Five Families of Arabic Verbs
Imagine a kingdom where verbs live in different houses. Each house has its own personality and special rules. Letโs meet these verb families!
๐ The Big Picture: Why Verb Types Matter
Think of Arabic verbs like different types of cars. Some run smoothly on all roads (Sound Verbs). Others have special features that need extra care (Weak Verbs). Some have twin engines (Doubled Verbs). A few have a quirky horn (Hamzated Verbs). And five special ones come with extra passengers (Five Verbs)!
When you know which โcarโ youโre driving, youโll never get lost!
1๏ธโฃ Sound Verbs (ุงูุฃูุนุงู ุงูุตุญูุญุฉ)
What Are They?
Sound Verbs are the โnormalโ verbs. They have no weak letters, no doubled letters, no hamza trouble. They follow all the rules perfectly!
The Simple Test
A verb is โsoundโ if its root letters are NOT:
- ู (waw)
- ู (yaa)
- ุก (hamza)
- And no letter repeats
Example in Action
ููุชูุจู (kataba) = He wrote
| Root Letters | Check |
|---|---|
| ู (kaaf) | โ Normal |
| ุช (taa) | โ Normal |
| ุจ (baa) | โ Normal |
All normal? Sound verb! ๐
More Examples
| Verb | Meaning | Why Itโs Sound |
|---|---|---|
| ุฌูููุณู | He sat | ุฌ-ู-ุณ all normal |
| ููุชูุญู | He opened | ู-ุช-ุญ all normal |
| ุฐูููุจู | He went | ุฐ-ู-ุจ all normal |
| ุดูุฑูุจู | He drank | ุด-ุฑ-ุจ all normal |
2๏ธโฃ Weak Verbs (ุงูุฃูุนุงู ุงูู ุนุชูุฉ)
What Are They?
Weak Verbs have at least one โweak letterโ in their root:
- ู (waw) or ู (yaa)
These letters are โweakโ because they like to change, hide, or disappear!
The Three Types of Weak Verbs
graph TD A["Weak Verbs"] --> B["Assimilated
First letter weak"] A --> C["Hollow
Middle letter weak"] A --> D["Defective
Last letter weak"]
Type 1: Assimilated (ุงูู ุซุงู)
First letter is ู or ู
ููุตููู (wasala) = He arrived
- Root: ู-ุต-ู
- The ู at the start is weak!
Type 2: Hollow (ุงูุฃุฌูู)
Middle letter is ู or ู
ููุงูู (qaala) = He said
- Root: ู-ู-ู
- The ู in the middle often disappears or changes!
Type 3: Defective (ุงููุงูุต)
Last letter is ู or ู
ู ูุดูู (mashaa) = He walked
- Root: ู -ุด-ู
- The ู at the end changes a lot!
Quick Reference
| Type | Position | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assimilated | First | ููุนูุฏู | He promised |
| Hollow | Middle | ููุงู ู | He slept |
| Defective | Last | ุฑูู ูู | He threw |
3๏ธโฃ Doubled Verbs (ุงูุฃูุนุงู ุงูู ุถุนููุฉ)
What Are They?
Doubled Verbs have the same letter twice as their second and third root letters!
Think of twins living in the same house!
The Pattern
Root = First letter + SAME + SAME
Example in Action
ู ูุฏูู (madda) = He stretched
- Root: ู -ุฏ-ุฏ
- See how ุฏ appears twice? Thatโs doubled!
The double letters often merge together with a ุดูุฏููุฉ (shaddah): ุฏู
More Examples
| Verb | Root | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ุดูุฏูู | ุด-ุฏ-ุฏ | He pulled tight |
| ุฑูุฏูู | ุฑ-ุฏ-ุฏ | He returned |
| ู ูุฑูู | ู -ุฑ-ุฑ | He passed by |
| ุนูุฏูู | ุน-ุฏ-ุฏ | He counted |
Why Theyโre Special
When conjugating, the doubled letters sometimes:
- Stay together (ู ูุฏูู = he stretched)
- Split apart (ู ูุฏูุฏูุชู = I stretched)
It depends on what comes after!
4๏ธโฃ Hamzated Verbs (ุงูุฃูุนุงู ุงูู ูู ูุฒุฉ)
What Are They?
Hamzated Verbs have ุก (hamza) in their root.
Hamza is like a shy guest - it keeps changing where it sits!

Examples by Position

|---|---|---|
| ุฃูุฎูุฐู | He took | ุก-ุฎ-ุฐ |

| ุณูุฃููู | He asked | ุณ-ุก-ู |

Last Position (ุงูู ูู ูุฒ ุงููุงู )
| Verb | Meaning | Root |
|---|---|---|
| ููุฑูุฃู | He read | ู-ุฑ-ุก |
| ุจูุฏูุฃู | He started | ุจ-ุฏ-ุก |
The Hamza Challenge
Hamza changes its โseatโ based on the vowels around it:
- ุฃ (on alif)
- ุค (on waw)
- ุฆ (on yaa)
- ุก (alone)
Donโt worry too much! Youโll learn the patterns with practice!
5๏ธโฃ Five Verbs (ุงูุฃูุนุงู ุงูุฎู ุณุฉ)
What Are They?
The Five Verbs are special conjugations that end with a ู (noon).
Theyโre not a separate verb type - theyโre five special FORMS any verb can take!
The Magic Five
These are present tense verbs for:
| Number | Form | Who? | Example with ููููุชูุจู |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ููููุนููุงูู | They two (m) | ููููุชูุจูุงูู |
| 2 | ุชูููุนููุงูู | They two (f) / You two | ุชูููุชูุจูุงูู |
| 3 | ููููุนูููููู | They (m, 3+) | ููููุชูุจูููู |
| 4 | ุชูููุนูููููู | You all (m) | ุชูููุชูุจูููู |
| 5 | ุชูููุนูููููู | You (f, singular) | ุชูููุชูุจูููู |
Why โFive Verbsโ?
They share special rules:
- Indicative: End with ู (the noon stays)
- Subjunctive/Jussive: The ู drops!
Example: โThey (2) writeโ
| Mood | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Indicative | ููููุชูุจูุงูู | They two write |
| Subjunctive | ููููุชูุจูุง | (that) they two write |
| Jussive | ููููุชูุจูุง | (let) them two write |
The ู disappears when grammar requires it!
