๐ŸŒŸ The Five Families of Arabic Verbs

Imagine a kingdom where verbs live in different houses. Each house has its own personality and special rules. Letโ€™s meet these verb families!

๐Ÿ The Big Picture: Why Verb Types Matter

Think of Arabic verbs like different types of cars. Some run smoothly on all roads (Sound Verbs). Others have special features that need extra care (Weak Verbs). Some have twin engines (Doubled Verbs). A few have a quirky horn (Hamzated Verbs). And five special ones come with extra passengers (Five Verbs)!

When you know which โ€œcarโ€ youโ€™re driving, youโ€™ll never get lost!

1๏ธโƒฃ Sound Verbs (ุงู„ุฃูุนุงู„ ุงู„ุตุญูŠุญุฉ)

What Are They?

Sound Verbs are the โ€œnormalโ€ verbs. They have no weak letters, no doubled letters, no hamza trouble. They follow all the rules perfectly!

The Simple Test

A verb is โ€œsoundโ€ if its root letters are NOT:

 • ูˆ (waw)
 • ูŠ (yaa)
 • ุก (hamza)
 • And no letter repeats

Example in Action

ูƒูŽุชูŽุจูŽ (kataba) = He wrote

Root Letters Check
ูƒ (kaaf) โœ… Normal
ุช (taa) โœ… Normal
ุจ (baa) โœ… Normal

All normal? Sound verb! ๐ŸŽ‰

More Examples

Verb Meaning Why Itโ€™s Sound
ุฌูŽู„ูŽุณูŽ He sat ุฌ-ู„-ุณ all normal
ููŽุชูŽุญูŽ He opened ู-ุช-ุญ all normal
ุฐูŽู‡ูŽุจูŽ He went ุฐ-ู‡-ุจ all normal
ุดูŽุฑูุจูŽ He drank ุด-ุฑ-ุจ all normal

2๏ธโƒฃ Weak Verbs (ุงู„ุฃูุนุงู„ ุงู„ู…ุนุชู„ุฉ)

What Are They?

Weak Verbs have at least one โ€œweak letterโ€ in their root:

 • ูˆ (waw) or ูŠ (yaa)

These letters are โ€œweakโ€ because they like to change, hide, or disappear!

The Three Types of Weak Verbs

graph TD A["Weak Verbs"] --> B["Assimilated
First letter weak"] A --> C["Hollow
Middle letter weak"] A --> D["Defective
Last letter weak"]

Type 1: Assimilated (ุงู„ู…ุซุงู„)

First letter is ูˆ or ูŠ

ูˆูŽุตูŽู„ูŽ (wasala) = He arrived

 • Root: ูˆ-ุต-ู„
 • The ูˆ at the start is weak!

Type 2: Hollow (ุงู„ุฃุฌูˆู)

Middle letter is ูˆ or ูŠ

ู‚ูŽุงู„ูŽ (qaala) = He said

 • Root: ู‚-ูˆ-ู„
 • The ูˆ in the middle often disappears or changes!

Type 3: Defective (ุงู„ู†ุงู‚ุต)

Last letter is ูˆ or ูŠ

ู…ูŽุดูŽู‰ (mashaa) = He walked

 • Root: ู…-ุด-ูŠ
 • The ูŠ at the end changes a lot!

Quick Reference

Type Position Example Meaning
Assimilated First ูˆูŽุนูŽุฏูŽ He promised
Hollow Middle ู†ูŽุงู…ูŽ He slept
Defective Last ุฑูŽู…ูŽู‰ He threw

3๏ธโƒฃ Doubled Verbs (ุงู„ุฃูุนุงู„ ุงู„ู…ุถุนู‘ูุฉ)

What Are They?

Doubled Verbs have the same letter twice as their second and third root letters!

Think of twins living in the same house!

The Pattern

Root = First letter + SAME + SAME

Example in Action

ู…ูŽุฏูŽู‘ (madda) = He stretched

 • Root: ู…-ุฏ-ุฏ
 • See how ุฏ appears twice? Thatโ€™s doubled!

The double letters often merge together with a ุดูŽุฏูŽู‘ุฉ (shaddah): ุฏู‘

More Examples

Verb Root Meaning
ุดูŽุฏูŽู‘ ุด-ุฏ-ุฏ He pulled tight
ุฑูŽุฏูŽู‘ ุฑ-ุฏ-ุฏ He returned
ู…ูŽุฑูŽู‘ ู…-ุฑ-ุฑ He passed by
ุนูŽุฏูŽู‘ ุน-ุฏ-ุฏ He counted

Why Theyโ€™re Special

When conjugating, the doubled letters sometimes:

 • Stay together (ู…ูŽุฏูŽู‘ = he stretched)
 • Split apart (ู…ูŽุฏูŽุฏู’ุชู = I stretched)

It depends on what comes after!

4๏ธโƒฃ Hamzated Verbs (ุงู„ุฃูุนุงู„ ุงู„ู…ู‡ู…ูˆุฒุฉ)

What Are They?

Hamzated Verbs have ุก (hamza) in their root.

Hamza is like a shy guest - it keeps changing where it sits!

Three Positions

Examples by Position

First Position (ุงู„ู…ู‡ู…ูˆุฒ ุงู„ูุงุก)

Verb Meaning Root
ุฃูŽุฎูŽุฐูŽ He took ุก-ุฎ-ุฐ
ุฃูŽู…ูŽุฑูŽ He ordered ุก-ู…-ุฑ

Middle Position (ุงู„ู…ู‡ู…ูˆุฒ ุงู„ุนูŠู†)

Verb Meaning Root
ุณูŽุฃูŽู„ูŽ He asked ุณ-ุก-ู„
ุฑูŽุฃูŽู‰ He saw ุฑ-ุก-ูŠ

Last Position (ุงู„ู…ู‡ู…ูˆุฒ ุงู„ู„ุงู…)

Verb Meaning Root
ู‚ูŽุฑูŽุฃูŽ He read ู‚-ุฑ-ุก
ุจูŽุฏูŽุฃูŽ He started ุจ-ุฏ-ุก

The Hamza Challenge

Hamza changes its โ€œseatโ€ based on the vowels around it:

 • ุฃ (on alif)
 • ุค (on waw)
 • ุฆ (on yaa)
 • ุก (alone)

Donโ€™t worry too much! Youโ€™ll learn the patterns with practice!

5๏ธโƒฃ Five Verbs (ุงู„ุฃูุนุงู„ ุงู„ุฎู…ุณุฉ)

What Are They?

The Five Verbs are special conjugations that end with a ู† (noon).

Theyโ€™re not a separate verb type - theyโ€™re five special FORMS any verb can take!

The Magic Five

These are present tense verbs for:

Number Form Who? Example with ูŠูŽูƒู’ุชูุจู
1 ูŠูŽูู’ุนูŽู„ุงู†ู They two (m) ูŠูŽูƒู’ุชูุจูŽุงู†ู
2 ุชูŽูู’ุนูŽู„ุงู†ู They two (f) / You two ุชูŽูƒู’ุชูุจูŽุงู†ู
3 ูŠูŽูู’ุนูŽู„ููˆู†ูŽ They (m, 3+) ูŠูŽูƒู’ุชูุจููˆู†ูŽ
4 ุชูŽูู’ุนูŽู„ููˆู†ูŽ You all (m) ุชูŽูƒู’ุชูุจููˆู†ูŽ
5 ุชูŽูู’ุนูŽู„ููŠู†ูŽ You (f, singular) ุชูŽูƒู’ุชูุจููŠู†ูŽ

Why โ€œFive Verbsโ€?

They share special rules:

 • Indicative: End with ู† (the noon stays)
 • Subjunctive/Jussive: The ู† drops!

Example: โ€œThey (2) writeโ€

Mood Form Meaning
Indicative ูŠูŽูƒู’ุชูุจูŽุงู†ู They two write
Subjunctive ูŠูŽูƒู’ุชูุจูŽุง (that) they two write
Jussive ูŠูŽูƒู’ุชูุจูŽุง (let) them two write

The ู† disappears when grammar requires it!
