Imagine you have a magic word-machine. You put in a simple word, twist some knobs, and out comes a new word that tells a completely different story!


๐ŸŽญ What Are We Learning?

In Arabic, verbs are like shape-shifters. The same basic verb can change its clothes to tell us:

  • WHO is doing the action (I, you, he, she, we, they)
  • WHAT direction the action goes (doing vs. having something done to you)

Think of it like a LEGO set โ€” you start with the same pieces and build different things!

What is Active Voice?

Active Voice = The person DOING the action is the star of the sentence.

Simple Analogy:

  • Imagine YOU are kicking a ball โšฝ
  • YOU are the hero. YOU did something.
  • The sentence is about YOUR action.

Arabic Active Voice Example

Arabic Transliteration Meaning
ูƒูŽุชูŽุจูŽ kataba He wrote
ุฃูŽูƒูŽู„ูŽ akala He ate
ููŽุชูŽุญูŽ fataha He opened

How to Spot Active Voice

The verb shows WHO did it:

  • The action comes FROM someone
  • That someone is the subject
  • They are in control!

What is Passive Voice?

Passive Voice = The person RECEIVING the action is the star!

Simple Analogy:

  • Imagine a ball is being kicked ๐ŸŽฏ
  • We donโ€™t care WHO kicked it
  • We care about the BALL โ€” what happened TO it

How Arabic Creates Passive Voice

Magic Trick: Change the vowels inside the verb!

Active (Doer) Passive (Receiver)
ูƒูŽุชูŽุจูŽ (kataba) = He wrote ูƒูุชูุจูŽ (kutiba) = It was written
ุฃูŽูƒูŽู„ูŽ (akala) = He ate ุฃููƒูู„ูŽ (ukila) = It was eaten
ููŽุชูŽุญูŽ (fataha) = He opened ููุชูุญูŽ (futiha) = It was opened

We donโ€™t know WHO wrote it. We only know the letter received the action of writing!

When to Use Passive Voice

  1. The doer is unknown: โ€œThe window was brokenโ€ (who did it? ๐Ÿคท)
  2. The doer doesnโ€™t matter: โ€œRice is eaten with handsโ€ (general fact)
  3. Being polite: โ€œMistakes were madeโ€ (not blaming anyone!)

What is Conjugation?

Conjugation = Changing a verb to match WHO is doing it and WHEN.

English Example:

  • I eat / He eats / They ate

Arabic does this too, but with its own magical system!

The Basic Pattern: ููŽุนูŽู„ูŽ (faโ€™ala)

Every Arabic verb has 3 root letters. Think of them as the DNA of the word!

Example: ูƒ-ุช-ุจ (k-t-b) = related to writing

From these 3 letters, we build everything:

  • ูƒูŽุชูŽุจูŽ (kataba) = he wrote
  • ูƒูุชูŽุงุจ (kitaab) = book
  • ู…ูŽูƒู’ุชููˆุจ (maktoob) = written/letter
  • ูƒูŽุงุชูุจ (kaatib) = writer
