🎯 Counting Things in Chinese: The Magic of Measure Words

Imagine you have a magical sorting hat, but instead of sorting people into houses, it sorts everything in the world into special groups. In Chinese, this “sorting hat” is called Measure Words (量词 liàngcí)!

🌟 Why Do We Need Measure Words?

In English, we say “a cup of water” or “a piece of paper.” We don’t say “one water” or “two papers.”

Chinese works the same way! Every time you count something, you need a special word between the number and the thing. It’s like a bridge connecting them!

Number + Measure Word + Thing
   一 + 个 + 人
  (one) + (general) + (person)

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Measure Words for People

个 (gè) - The Universal People Counter

Think of as your best friend for counting people. It works for almost everyone!

Chinese Pinyin Meaning
一个人 yī gè rén one person
三个朋友 sān gè péngyou three friends
五个学生 wǔ gè xuésheng five students

位 (wèi) - The Polite Counter

When you want to be extra respectful, use . It’s like adding “sir” or “madam”!

Chinese Pinyin Meaning
一位老师 yī wèi lǎoshī one teacher (respectful)
两位医生 liǎng wèi yīshēng two doctors (respectful)
三位客人 sān wèi kèrén three guests (respectful)

🧙‍♂️ Magic Tip: Use for teachers, doctors, elderly people, and important guests. It shows you have good manners!

🌈 Remember This Pattern

Number + Measure Word + Noun

Every category has its special measure word:

  • 🐾 Animals: 只, 头, 匹, 条
  • 🫙 Containers: 杯, 瓶, 碗, 盒, 袋
  • 🎬 Actions: 次, 遍, 趟, 顿
  • Time: 天, 周, 月, 年, 小时, 分钟
