🚀 Talking About Time: Future and Conditional in French

The Time Machine Analogy

Imagine you have a magical time machine with two buttons:

  • 🔵 FUTURE Button → Takes you to things that WILL happen
  • 🟡 DREAM Button → Takes you to things that COULD happen (if something else happened first)

That’s exactly how French verbs work! Let’s explore each button together.

1. Future Simple Formation (Le Futur Simple)

🎯 What Is It?

The future simple is how you say “I WILL do something” in French. It’s for things that are definitely going to happen later.

🏗️ How to Build It

Here’s the magic recipe:

INFINITIVE VERB + ENDINGS

The Endings (same for ALL verbs!):

Person Ending Example with PARLER
Je -ai je parlerai
Tu -as tu parleras
Il/Elle -a il parlera
Nous -ons nous parlerons
Vous -ez vous parlerez
Ils/Elles -ont ils parleront

🎨 Simple Examples

PARLER (to speak):

  • Je parlerai français = I will speak French

FINIR (to finish):

  • Tu finiras ton travail = You will finish your work

ATTENDRE (to wait):

  • Elle attendra le bus = She will wait for the bus

💡 The Secret

Notice how the endings look like the verb “avoir” (to have)?

  • j’ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont

That’s your memory trick! The future = infinitive + “avoir” endings!

2. Future Simple Irregular Stems

🌟 The Rebel Verbs

Some verbs are rebels. They don’t use their infinitive form. Instead, they have special stems. But good news: they still use the SAME endings!

📋 The VIP List (Memorize These!)

Verb Meaning Irregular Stem Example
être to be ser- je serai (I will be)
avoir to have aur- tu auras (you will have)
aller to go ir- il ira (he will go)
faire to do/make fer- nous ferons (we will do)
venir to come viendr- vous viendrez (you will come)
voir to see verr- ils verront (they will see)
pouvoir can pourr- je pourrai (I will be able)
vouloir to want voudr- tu voudras (you will want)
savoir to know saur- elle saura (she will know)
devoir must devr- nous devrons (we will have to)
envoyer to send enverr- j’enverrai (I will send)

🧠 Memory Trick

Most irregular stems end in -R. Say them out loud:

  • ser-R, aur-R, ir-R, fer-R, viendr-R, verr-R…

The “R” sound is the future calling you!

🎯 Practice Sentences

  • Demain, je serai à Paris = Tomorrow, I will be in Paris
  • Tu auras beaucoup d’amis = You will have many friends
  • Nous irons à la plage = We will go to the beach

3. Future Proche (Near Future)

🏃 What Is It?

This is the EASY future! It means something is about to happen RIGHT NOW or very soon.

Think of it as saying: “I’m going to eat” instead of “I will eat”

🏗️ How to Build It

ALLER (conjugated) + INFINITIVE VERB

That’s it! Just conjugate “aller” and add any verb!

📋 ALLER in Present Tense

Person Aller + Infinitive
Je vais manger
Tu vas manger
Il/Elle va manger
Nous allons manger
Vous allez manger
Ils/Elles vont manger

🎨 Examples

  • Je vais manger = I’m going to eat
  • Tu vas partir = You’re going to leave
  • Elle va téléphoner = She’s going to call
  • Nous allons voyager = We’re going to travel

⚡ Future Simple vs Future Proche

Future Proche Future Simple
Je vais partir Je partirai
Happening soon Happening sometime later
More casual More formal
“I’m going to leave” “I will leave”

Think of it like this:

  • Future proche = 🏃 Running to catch the bus (it’s happening NOW!)
  • Future simple = 📅 Planning a trip for next month

4. Conditional Present (Le Conditionnel Présent)

🌈 What Is It?

Remember the DREAM button on our time machine? This is it!

The conditional says: “I WOULD do something… IF conditions were right”

🏗️ How to Build It

FUTURE STEM + IMPERFECT ENDINGS

Wait, what? Let me explain:

  1. Take the same stem you use for future simple
  2. Add imperfect tense endings

📋 The Endings

Person Ending Example with PARLER
Je -ais je parlerais
Tu -ais tu parlerais
Il/Elle -ait il parlerait
Nous -ions nous parlerions
Vous -iez vous parleriez
Ils/Elles -aient ils parleraient

🎯 Regular Examples

  • Je parlerais = I would speak
  • Tu finirais = You would finish
  • Nous attendrions = We would wait

⭐ Irregular Examples (Same stems as future!)

  • Je serais (être) = I would be
  • Tu aurais (avoir) = You would have
  • Il irait (aller) = He would go
  • Nous ferions (faire) = We would do
  • Vous pourriez (pouvoir) = You could

💫 When to Use It?

  1. Polite requests:

    • Je voudrais un café = I would like a coffee
  2. Imaginary situations:

    • Si j’étais riche, j’achèterais une maison
    • If I were rich, I would buy a house
  3. Giving advice:

    • Tu devrais étudier = You should study
  4. Wishes and dreams:

    • J’aimerais voyager = I would like to travel

5. Conditional Past (Le Conditionnel Passé)

🕰️ What Is It?

This is the regret tense! It talks about things that WOULD HAVE happened… but didn’t.

“I would have gone to the party… but I was sick.”

🏗️ How to Build It

AVOIR or ÊTRE (conditional) + PAST PARTICIPLE

📋 Quick Breakdown

Step 1: Put avoir or être in conditional present:

  • j’aurais, tu aurais, il aurait…
  • je serais, tu serais, il serait…

Step 2: Add the past participle:

  • parlé, fini, vendu, allé, parti…

🎨 Examples with AVOIR

French English
J’aurais parlé I would have spoken
Tu aurais fini You would have finished
Il aurait mangé He would have eaten
Nous aurions vu We would have seen

🎨 Examples with ÊTRE

Remember: verbs of movement + reflexive verbs use être!

French English
Je serais allé(e) I would have gone
Tu serais parti(e) You would have left
Elle serait venue She would have come
Nous serions restés We would have stayed

💭 When to Use It?

  1. Regrets:

    • J’aurais dû étudier = I should have studied
  2. Missed opportunities:

    • J’aurais aimé te voir = I would have liked to see you
  3. Hypothetical past:

    • Si j’avais su, je serais venu = If I had known, I would have come
  4. Polite uncertainty about past:

    • Il aurait dit que… = He allegedly said that…
