🇮🇹 The Conditional Mood in Italian

“What Would Happen If…”

Imagine you have a magic wand. 🪄

With this wand, you can talk about:

 • Things you would do (if something were different)
 • Things you would have done (but didn’t)
 • Polite requests (like asking nicely for cookies!)

In Italian, this magic wand is called the Conditional Mood (il condizionale). It’s your tool for dreaming, wishing, and being extra polite!

🎭 Part 1: Conditional Present Formation

Building Your Magic Wand

The conditional present is like saying “I would do something.”

The Magic Formula

Take the future stem of any verb and add these special endings:

Person Ending Example with parlare
io -ei parlerei (I would speak)
tu -esti parleresti
lui/lei -ebbe parlerebbe
noi -emmo parleremmo
voi -este parlereste
loro -ebbero parlerebbero

🔑 The Secret Pattern

For -ARE verbs: Change -are to -er, then add endings

 • parlare → parler- → parlerei

For -ERE verbs: Drop -ere, keep the stem, add -er + endings

 • credere → creder- → crederei

For -IRE verbs: Drop -ire, add -ir + endings

 • dormire → dormir- → dormirei

✨ Quick Examples

Verb Conditional Meaning
mangiare mangierei I would eat
leggere leggerei I would read
partire partirei I would leave

💡 Think of it like this: “Would” in English = conditional endings in Italian!

🦄 Part 2: Conditional Present Irregulars

The Rebel Verbs

Some verbs are like naughty children—they don’t follow the rules! But don’t worry, they follow patterns.

The Dropout Club (-e disappears)

These verbs lose their -e before adding endings:

Verb Stem Example
avere avr- avrei (I would have)
dovere dovr- dovrei (I should)
potere potr- potrei (I could)
sapere sapr- saprei (I would know)
vedere vedr- vedrei (I would see)
vivere vivr- vivrei (I would live)

The Double-R Club (rr magic)

These verbs get a double r:

Verb Stem Example
bere berr- berrei (I would drink)
venire verr- verrei (I would come)
volere vorr- vorrei (I would want)
rimanere rimarr- rimarrei (I would stay)
tenere terr- terrei (I would hold)

The Totally Wild Ones

Verb Stem Example
essere sar- sarei (I would be)
fare far- farei (I would do)
dare dar- darei (I would give)
stare star- starei (I would stay)
andare andr- andrei (I would go)
graph TD A["Irregular Verbs"] --> B["Dropout Club"] A --> C["Double-R Club"] A --> D["Wild Cards"] B --> E["avere→avr-
potere→potr-"] C --> F["volere→vorr-
venire→verr-"] D --> G["essere→sar-
fare→far-"]

🎵 Memory trick: “Vorrei un gelato!” (I would like an ice cream!) - You’ll say this a lot in Italy!

🎁 Part 3: Uses of the Conditional

When to Wave Your Magic Wand

1️⃣ Polite Requests (Being Super Nice!)

Instead of demanding, you ask sweetly:

Rude 😠 Polite 😊
Voglio un caffè! Vorrei un caffè.
Puoi aiutarmi? Potresti aiutarmi?
Devi venire! Dovresti venire.

💡 Using the conditional makes you sound like a polite princess/prince!

2️⃣ Wishes and Desires

Express what you’d love to do:

 • Mangerei una pizza enorme! (I would eat a huge pizza!)
 • Viaggerei per il mondo. (I would travel the world.)
 • Comprerei quella macchina. (I would buy that car.)

3️⃣ Advice and Suggestions

Gently tell someone what they should do:

 • Dovresti studiare di più. (You should study more.)
 • Potresti provare questo. (You could try this.)
 • Al tuo posto, andrei dal dottore. (In your place, I would go to the doctor.)

4️⃣ Hypothetical Situations

What would happen IF…

 • Se avessi tempo, leggerei quel libro. (If I had time, I would read that book.)
 • Con più soldi, comprerei una casa. (With more money, I would buy a house.)

5️⃣ Reported Speech (What Someone Said)

Reporting what others claim:

 • Marco avrebbe 30 anni. (Marco is said to be 30.)
 • Loro arriverebbero domani. (They supposedly arrive tomorrow.)
graph TD A["Conditional Uses"] --> B["🙏 Polite Requests"] A --> C["💭 Wishes"] A --> D["💡 Advice"] A --> E["🤔 Hypotheticals"] A --> F["📢 Reported Speech"] B --> G["Vorrei..."] C --> H["Mangerei..."] D --> I["Dovresti..."] E --> J["Se + past subj..."] F --> K["Sarebbe..."]

⏰ Part 4: Conditional Past

“I Would Have Done It…”

Now let’s go back in time! The conditional past talks about things that would have happened but didn’t.

The Formula

AVERE or ESSERE (conditional) + Past Participle

With AVERE

Person Example Meaning
io avrei mangiato I would have eaten
tu avresti parlato you would have spoken
lui/lei avrebbe dormito he/she would have slept
noi avremmo letto we would have read
voi avreste scritto you all would have written
loro avrebbero capito they would have understood

With ESSERE (for motion/state verbs)

Person Example Meaning
io sarei andato/a I would have gone
tu saresti venuto/a you would have come
lui/lei sarebbe partito/a he/she would have left
noi saremmo arrivati/e we would have arrived
voi sareste usciti/e you all would have gone out
loro sarebbero tornati/e they would have returned

⚠️ Remember: With ESSERE, the past participle agrees with the subject! (Like an adjective)

🎬 Real-Life Examples

Expressing regret:

 • Avrei dovuto studiare di più. (I should have studied more.)
 • Sarei dovuta andare prima. (I should have gone earlier.) [female speaker]

Unfulfilled wishes:

 • Avrei voluto vedere quel film. (I would have liked to see that movie.)
 • Sarei venuto alla festa, ma ero malato. (I would have come to the party, but I was sick.)

Hypothetical past:

 • Se avessi saputo, ti avrei chiamato. (If I had known, I would have called you.)
 • Con più tempo, avremmo finito. (With more time, we would have finished.)
graph TD A["Conditional Past"] --> B{Auxiliary?} B --> C["AVERE verbs"] B --> D["ESSERE verbs"] C --> E["avrei + participle
avrei mangiato"] D --> F["sarei + participle
sarei andato/a"] E --> G["Past participle
stays same"] F --> H["Past participle
agrees with subject!"]
