🇮🇹 Time & Calendar in Italian: Your Magical Time Machine!
Imagine you have a magical time machine. Every button you press speaks Italian! Today, we’re going to learn how Italians talk about when things happen—the time on the clock, the days of the week, months, seasons, and dates. By the end, you’ll be able to tell anyone in Italy exactly when your birthday is! 🎂
⏰ Telling Time (Che ore sono?)
The Big Question
In Italian, when you want to know the time, you ask:
“Che ore sono?” (What time is it?)
Think of it like asking: “What hours are they?” Italians see time as a team of hours working together!
How to Answer
| Time | Italian | How to Remember |
|---|---|---|
| 1:00 | È l’una | It IS the one (singular!) |
| 2:00 | Sono le due | They ARE two |
| 3:00 | Sono le tre | They ARE three |
| 12:00 | È mezzogiorno | It’s MIDDAY |
| 12:00 AM | È mezzanotte | It’s MIDNIGHT |
🧠 Memory Trick: Only 1:00, noon, and midnight use “È” (is). Everything else uses “Sono le…” (they are)!
Adding Minutes
Think of minutes as little friends joining the hour:
| Time | Italian |
|---|---|
| 3:15 | Sono le tre e quindici |
| 3:30 | Sono le tre e mezza (half) |
| 3:45 | Sono le quattro meno quindici |
✨ The “Meno” Magic: After :30, Italians often say “minus” from the next hour!
- 3:45 = “4 minus 15” = le quattro meno quindici
Quick Examples
- 8:00 AM → Sono le otto (del mattino)
- 9:30 PM → Sono le nove e mezza (di sera)
- 12:00 noon → È mezzogiorno
📅 Days of the Week (I giorni della settimana)
Imagine a week as a family of 7 siblings, each with their own personality!

The Days & Their Stories
| Italian | English | Fun Origin |
|---|---|---|
| Lunedì | Monday | Luna = Moon 🌙 |
| Martedì | Tuesday | Marte = Mars 🔴 |
| Mercoledì | Wednesday | Mercurio = Mercury 💧 |
| Giovedì | Thursday | Giove = Jupiter ⚡ |
| Venerdì | Friday | Venere = Venus 💕 |
| Sabato | Saturday | From “Sabbath” 🌾 |
| Domenica | Sunday | Dies Domini = Lord’s Day ☀️ |
🎯 Pattern Alert: Monday through Friday end in -dì (from Latin “day”). Easy to spot!
Using Days in Sentences
- Oggi è lunedì. → Today is Monday.
- Domani è martedì. → Tomorrow is Tuesday.
- Ci vediamo venerdì! → See you Friday!
📆 Months of the Year (I mesi dell’anno)
The 12 months march through the year like a parade. Good news: they look very similar to English!
| # | Italian | English | Pronunciation Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gennaio | January | jen-NAH-yo |
| 2 | Febbraio | February | feb-BRAH-yo |
| 3 | Marzo | March | MAR-tso |
| 4 | Aprile | April | ah-PREE-leh |
| 5 | Maggio | May | MAH-jo |
| 6 | Giugno | June | JOO-nyo |
| 7 | Luglio | July | LOO-lyo |
| 8 | Agosto | August | ah-GOS-toh |

💡 Notice: September through December keep the Latin number roots:
- Settembre (sept = 7 in old Roman calendar)
- Ottobre (oct = 8)
- Novembre (nov = 9)
- Dicembre (dec = 10)
Using Months
- Il mio compleanno è in maggio. → My birthday is in May.
- Siamo in dicembre. → We are in December.
🌸🌞🍂❄️ The Four Seasons (Le quattro stagioni)
The seasons are like four costume changes for nature!

| Season | Italian | When |
|---|---|---|
| 🌸 Spring | La primavera | March - May |
| 🌞 Summer | L’estate | June - August |
| 🍂 Autumn | L’autunno | September - November |
| ❄️ Winter | L’inverno | December - February |
Using Seasons
- In primavera fioriscono i fiori. → In spring, flowers bloom.
- D’estate fa caldo. → In summer, it’s hot.
- In autunno cadono le foglie. → In autumn, leaves fall.
- D’inverno nevica. → In winter, it snows.
📝 Grammar Note: Use “in” or “d’” before seasons:
- in primavera, in autunno, in inverno
- d’estate (because “estate” starts with “e”)
📌 Dates and Years (Le date e gli anni)
Writing the Date
Italians write dates differently than Americans:
Day / Month / Year (not Month / Day / Year!)
So December 25, 2024 becomes: 25/12/2024 or 25 dicembre 2024
Saying the Date
| Format | Example |
|---|---|
| Full | Il venticinque dicembre duemilaventiquattro |
| Spoken | “Il 25 dicembre 2024” |
🎯 Key Pattern: Use “il” (the) + number + month + year
Ordinal for the First
Only the first of the month uses an ordinal number:
- Il primo gennaio → January 1st (the FIRST)
- Il due gennaio → January 2nd (just “two”)
- Il tre gennaio → January 3rd (just “three”)
Examples
- Oggi è il 22 dicembre 2024. → Today is December 22, 2024.
- Il mio compleanno è il 15 agosto. → My birthday is August 15th.
- Sono nato nel 1995. → I was born in 1995.
Saying Years
| Year | Italian |
|---|---|
| 2000 | duemila |
| 2024 | duemilaventiquattro |
| 1990 | millenovecentonovanta |
🔢 Year Formula:
- 2024 = due (2) + mila (thousand) + venti (20) + quattro (4)
🎯 Quick Reference Table
| Concept | Italian | English |
