๐ Letโs Talk Like Friends in Japanese!
The Magic Words That Make Friends Say โLetโs Do It Together!โ
Imagine you have a magic wand. When you wave it and say special words, suddenly everyone wants to play with you! In Japanese, we have these magic words too. They help us:
- Invite friends to do fun things together
- Share our plans about what we want to do
- Describe people and things so others can picture them
Letโs learn these superpowers! ๐
๐ฏ Part 1: Making Suggestions with ใพใใใ (mashou)
The โLetโs Do It Together!โ Spell
Think of ใพใใใ (mashou) as your invitation card. When you add it to a verb, youโre saying โHey, letโs do this together!โ
How Does It Work?
Itโs like building with blocks:
Verb Stem + ใพใใใ = "Let's [do something]!"
๐ Examples That Make Sense
| Japanese | Reading | English |
|---|---|---|
| ้ฃในใพใใใ | tabe-mashou | Letโs eat! |
| ่กใใพใใใ | iki-mashou | Letโs go! |
| ่ฆใพใใใ | mi-mashou | Letโs watch! |
| ้ใณใพใใใ | asobi-mashou | Letโs play! |
| ๅๅผทใใพใใใ | benkyou shimashou | Letโs study! |
๐ฌ Real-Life Story
Scene: Itโs lunch time at school.
๐ง Yuki: ใๆผใงใใญใไธ็ทใซ้ฃในใพใใใ๏ผ (Ohiru desu ne. Issho ni tabemashou!) โItโs lunchtime! Letโs eat together!โ
๐ฆ Ken: ใใใงใใญ๏ผ่กใใพใใใ๏ผ (Ii desu ne! Ikimashou!) โSounds good! Letโs go!โ
See? Yuki used the magic word to invite Ken. And Ken agreed with another ใพใใใ!
๐ฎ The Question Version: ใพใใใใ (mashou ka)
Want to be extra polite? Add ใ (ka) at the end!
| Suggestion | Polite Question |
|---|---|
| ๆไผใใพใใใ (Iโll help) | ๆไผใใพใใใใ๏ผ(Shall I help?) |
| ็ชใ้ใใพใใใ (Letโs open) | ็ชใ้ใใพใใใใ๏ผ(Shall we open the window?) |
This is like asking โWould you like me toโฆ?โ Very kind! ๐
๐ Part 2: Sharing Plans and Intentions
Telling Others What You WILL Do
When you decide to do something, Japanese has special ways to share your plans.
Pattern 1: ใคใใ (tsumori) - โI intend toโฆโ
Think of ใคใใ as your brainโs sticky note. Itโs what youโve decided in your head!
Verb (dictionary form) + ใคใใใงใ
= "I intend to / I plan to..."
๐ Examples
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| ๆๆฅใๅๅผทใใใคใใใงใ | I plan to study tomorrow |
| ๆฅๆฌใซ่กใใคใใใงใ | I intend to go to Japan |
| ใฑใผใญใไฝใใคใใใงใ | I plan to make a cake |
Pattern 2: ไบๅฎ (yotei) - โItโs scheduledโ
ไบๅฎ (yotei) is more like writing something in your calendar. Itโs official!
Verb (dictionary form) + ไบๅฎใงใ
= "I'm scheduled to / The plan is to..."
๐ Examples
| Japanese | English |
|---|---|
| 3ๆใซไผใไบๅฎใงใ | Iโm scheduled to meet at 3 |
| ๆฅๆ็ตๅฉใใไบๅฎใงใ | The plan is to get married next month |
๐ฌ Real-Life Story

๐ฆ Taro: ๅๆๆฅใฏๆ ็ปใ่ฆใไบๅฎใ ใใๆฅๆๆฅใฏๅฎถใงใใฃใใใใใคใใใ (Doyoubi wa eiga wo miru yotei da yo. Nichiyoubi wa ie de yukkuri suru tsumori.) โSaturday Iโm scheduled to watch a movie. Sunday I intend to relax at home.โ
Notice: ไบๅฎ for the set plan (movie), ใคใใ for the personal intention (relaxing).
Pattern 3: The Volitional Form (๏ฝใใ/ใใ)
This is the casual, friendly way to say โLetโsโฆโ or โIโllโฆโ
| Verb Type | Change | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ใ-verbs | u โ ou | ่กใ โ ่กใใ (ikou) |
| ใ-verbs | ru โ you | ้ฃในใ โ ้ฃในใใ (tabeyou) |
| ใใ | โ ใใใ | ๅๅผทใใใ (benkyou shiyou) |
| ๆฅใ | โ ใใใ | ๆฅใใ (koyou) |
๐ฌ Casual Conversation
๐ฆ โใญใใๆ ็ป่ฆใใ๏ผโ (Nee, eiga miyou!) โHey, letโs watch a movie!โ
๐ง โใใใ่กใใ๏ผโ (Un, ikou!) โYeah, letโs go!โ
๐จ Part 3: Describing People and Things
Painting Pictures with Words
Now for the fun part! How do we describe what people and things are like?
ใ-Adjectives (i-adjectives)
These words end in ใ and describe things directly!
| Japanese | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ๅคงใใ | ookii | big |
| ๅฐใใ | chiisai | small |
| ้ซใ | takai | tall/expensive |
| ๅฎใ | yasui | cheap |
| ๆฐใใ | atarashii | new |
| ๅคใ | furui | old |
| ใใใใ | oishii | delicious |
| ใใใใ | kawaii | cute |
Using ใ-Adjectives
Before a noun:
- ๅคงใใ็ฌ (ookii inu) = big dog
- ใใใใ็ซ (kawaii neko) = cute cat
At the end of a sentence:
- ใใฎ็ฌใฏๅคงใใใงใ (Kono inu wa ookii desu) = This dog is big
ใช-Adjectives (na-adjectives)
These need ใช when they come before a noun!
| Japanese | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ใใใ | kirei | beautiful/clean |
| ้ใ | shizuka | quiet |
| ๆๅ | yuumei | famous |
| ๅ ๆฐ | genki | energetic/healthy |
| ่ฆชๅ | shinsetsu | kind |
| ไพฟๅฉ | benri | convenient |
Using ใช-Adjectives
Before a noun (add ใช):
- ใใใใช่ฑ (kirei na hana) = beautiful flower
- ้ใใช้จๅฑ (shizuka na heya) = quiet room
At the end of a sentence:
- ใใฎ่ฑใฏใใใใงใ (Kono hana wa kirei desu) = This flower is beautiful
๐ฌ Describing People
Letโs describe our friend Yuki!
ใใใใใฏ่ฆชๅใชไบบใงใใใใคใๅ ๆฐใงใ็ฌ้กใใใใใใงใใ (Yuki-san wa shinsetsu na hito desu. Itsumo genki de, egao ga kawaii desu.) โYuki is a kind person. Sheโs always energetic, and her smile is cute.โ
Combining Descriptions
Want to list multiple descriptions? Hereโs how:
For ใ-adjectives: Change ใ โ ใใฆ
- ๅคงใใ + ้ซใ = ๅคงใใใฆ้ซใ (big and tall)
For ใช-adjectives: Add ใง
- ใใใ + ้ใ = ใใใใง้ใ (beautiful and quiet)
๐ Example
ใใฎ้จๅฑใฏๅบใใฆใใใใใงใ้ใใงใใ (Kono heya wa hirokute, kirei de, shizuka desu.) โThis room is spacious, beautiful, and quiet.โ
