๐ŸŽŒ Letโ€™s Talk Like Friends in Japanese!

The Magic Words That Make Friends Say โ€œLetโ€™s Do It Together!โ€

Imagine you have a magic wand. When you wave it and say special words, suddenly everyone wants to play with you! In Japanese, we have these magic words too. They help us:

  1. Invite friends to do fun things together
  2. Share our plans about what we want to do
  3. Describe people and things so others can picture them

Letโ€™s learn these superpowers! ๐Ÿš€

๐ŸŽฏ Part 1: Making Suggestions with ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (mashou)

The โ€œLetโ€™s Do It Together!โ€ Spell

Think of ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (mashou) as your invitation card. When you add it to a verb, youโ€™re saying โ€œHey, letโ€™s do this together!โ€

How Does It Work?

Itโ€™s like building with blocks:

Verb Stem + ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† = "Let's [do something]!"

๐ŸŒŸ Examples That Make Sense

Japanese Reading English
้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† tabe-mashou Letโ€™s eat!
่กŒใใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† iki-mashou Letโ€™s go!
่ฆ‹ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† mi-mashou Letโ€™s watch!
้Šใณใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† asobi-mashou Letโ€™s play!
ๅ‹‰ๅผทใ—ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† benkyou shimashou Letโ€™s study!

๐ŸŽฌ Real-Life Story

Scene: Itโ€™s lunch time at school.

๐Ÿ‘ง Yuki: ใŠๆ˜ผใงใ™ใญใ€‚ไธ€็ท’ใซ้ฃŸในใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†๏ผ (Ohiru desu ne. Issho ni tabemashou!) โ€œItโ€™s lunchtime! Letโ€™s eat together!โ€

๐Ÿ‘ฆ Ken: ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ใญ๏ผ่กŒใใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†๏ผ (Ii desu ne! Ikimashou!) โ€œSounds good! Letโ€™s go!โ€

See? Yuki used the magic word to invite Ken. And Ken agreed with another ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†!

๐Ÿ”ฎ The Question Version: ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹ (mashou ka)

Want to be extra polite? Add ใ‹ (ka) at the end!

Suggestion Polite Question
ๆ‰‹ไผใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (Iโ€™ll help) ๆ‰‹ไผใ„ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹๏ผŸ(Shall I help?)
็ช“ใ‚’้–‹ใ‘ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ† (Letโ€™s open) ็ช“ใ‚’้–‹ใ‘ใพใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹๏ผŸ(Shall we open the window?)

This is like asking โ€œWould you like me toโ€ฆ?โ€ Very kind! ๐Ÿ’

๐Ÿ“… Part 2: Sharing Plans and Intentions

Telling Others What You WILL Do

When you decide to do something, Japanese has special ways to share your plans.

Pattern 1: ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Š (tsumori) - โ€œI intend toโ€ฆโ€

Think of ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Š as your brainโ€™s sticky note. Itโ€™s what youโ€™ve decided in your head!

Verb (dictionary form) + ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Šใงใ™
= "I intend to / I plan to..."

๐ŸŒŸ Examples

Japanese English
ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅใ€ๅ‹‰ๅผทใ™ใ‚‹ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Šใงใ™ I plan to study tomorrow
ๆ—ฅๆœฌใซ่กŒใใคใ‚‚ใ‚Šใงใ™ I intend to go to Japan
ใ‚ฑใƒผใ‚ญใ‚’ไฝœใ‚‹ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Šใงใ™ I plan to make a cake

Pattern 2: ไบˆๅฎš (yotei) - โ€œItโ€™s scheduledโ€

ไบˆๅฎš (yotei) is more like writing something in your calendar. Itโ€™s official!

Verb (dictionary form) + ไบˆๅฎšใงใ™
= "I'm scheduled to / The plan is to..."

๐ŸŒŸ Examples

Japanese English
3ๆ™‚ใซไผšใ†ไบˆๅฎšใงใ™ Iโ€™m scheduled to meet at 3
ๆฅๆœˆ็ตๅฉšใ™ใ‚‹ไบˆๅฎšใงใ™ The plan is to get married next month

๐ŸŽฌ Real-Life Story

Scene: Two friends talking about the weekend.

๐Ÿ‘ง Sakura: ้€ฑๆœซใ€ไฝ•ใ‚’ใ™ใ‚‹ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Š๏ผŸ (Shuumatsu, nani wo suru tsumori?) โ€œWhat do you plan to do on the weekend?โ€

๐Ÿ‘ฆ Taro: ๅœŸๆ›œๆ—ฅใฏๆ˜ ็”ปใ‚’่ฆ‹ใ‚‹ไบˆๅฎšใ ใ‚ˆใ€‚ๆ—ฅๆ›œๆ—ฅใฏๅฎถใงใ‚†ใฃใใ‚Šใ™ใ‚‹ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Šใ€‚ (Doyoubi wa eiga wo miru yotei da yo. Nichiyoubi wa ie de yukkuri suru tsumori.) โ€œSaturday Iโ€™m scheduled to watch a movie. Sunday I intend to relax at home.โ€

Notice: ไบˆๅฎš for the set plan (movie), ใคใ‚‚ใ‚Š for the personal intention (relaxing).

Pattern 3: The Volitional Form (๏ฝžใŠใ†/ใ‚ˆใ†)

This is the casual, friendly way to say โ€œLetโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ or โ€œIโ€™llโ€ฆโ€

Verb Type Change Example
ใ†-verbs u โ†’ ou ่กŒใ โ†’ ่กŒใ“ใ† (ikou)
ใ‚‹-verbs ru โ†’ you ้ฃŸในใ‚‹ โ†’ ้ฃŸในใ‚ˆใ† (tabeyou)
ใ™ใ‚‹ โ†’ ใ—ใ‚ˆใ† ๅ‹‰ๅผทใ—ใ‚ˆใ† (benkyou shiyou)
ๆฅใ‚‹ โ†’ ใ“ใ‚ˆใ† ๆฅใ‚ˆใ† (koyou)

๐ŸŽฌ Casual Conversation

๐Ÿ‘ฆ โ€œใญใˆใ€ๆ˜ ็”ป่ฆ‹ใ‚ˆใ†๏ผโ€ (Nee, eiga miyou!) โ€œHey, letโ€™s watch a movie!โ€

๐Ÿ‘ง โ€œใ†ใ‚“ใ€่กŒใ“ใ†๏ผโ€ (Un, ikou!) โ€œYeah, letโ€™s go!โ€

๐ŸŽจ Part 3: Describing People and Things

Painting Pictures with Words

Now for the fun part! How do we describe what people and things are like?

ใ„-Adjectives (i-adjectives)

These words end in ใ„ and describe things directly!

Japanese Reading Meaning
ๅคงใใ„ ookii big
ๅฐใ•ใ„ chiisai small
้ซ˜ใ„ takai tall/expensive
ๅฎ‰ใ„ yasui cheap
ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„ atarashii new
ๅคใ„ furui old
ใŠใ„ใ—ใ„ oishii delicious
ใ‹ใ‚ใ„ใ„ kawaii cute

Using ใ„-Adjectives

Before a noun:

  • ๅคงใใ„็Šฌ (ookii inu) = big dog
  • ใ‹ใ‚ใ„ใ„็Œซ (kawaii neko) = cute cat

At the end of a sentence:

  • ใ“ใฎ็Šฌใฏๅคงใใ„ใงใ™ (Kono inu wa ookii desu) = This dog is big

ใช-Adjectives (na-adjectives)

These need ใช when they come before a noun!

Japanese Reading Meaning
ใใ‚Œใ„ kirei beautiful/clean
้™ใ‹ shizuka quiet
ๆœ‰ๅ yuumei famous
ๅ…ƒๆฐ— genki energetic/healthy
่ฆชๅˆ‡ shinsetsu kind
ไพฟๅˆฉ benri convenient

Using ใช-Adjectives

Before a noun (add ใช):

  • ใใ‚Œใ„ใช่Šฑ (kirei na hana) = beautiful flower
  • ้™ใ‹ใช้ƒจๅฑ‹ (shizuka na heya) = quiet room

At the end of a sentence:

  • ใ“ใฎ่Šฑใฏใใ‚Œใ„ใงใ™ (Kono hana wa kirei desu) = This flower is beautiful

๐ŸŽฌ Describing People

Letโ€™s describe our friend Yuki!

ใ‚†ใใ•ใ‚“ใฏ่ฆชๅˆ‡ใชไบบใงใ™ใ€‚ใ„ใคใ‚‚ๅ…ƒๆฐ—ใงใ€็ฌ‘้ก”ใŒใ‹ใ‚ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚ (Yuki-san wa shinsetsu na hito desu. Itsumo genki de, egao ga kawaii desu.) โ€œYuki is a kind person. Sheโ€™s always energetic, and her smile is cute.โ€

Combining Descriptions

Want to list multiple descriptions? Hereโ€™s how:

For ใ„-adjectives: Change ใ„ โ†’ ใใฆ

  • ๅคงใใ„ + ้ซ˜ใ„ = ๅคงใใใฆ้ซ˜ใ„ (big and tall)

For ใช-adjectives: Add ใง

  • ใใ‚Œใ„ + ้™ใ‹ = ใใ‚Œใ„ใง้™ใ‹ (beautiful and quiet)

๐ŸŒŸ Example

ใ“ใฎ้ƒจๅฑ‹ใฏๅบƒใใฆใ€ใใ‚Œใ„ใงใ€้™ใ‹ใงใ™ใ€‚ (Kono heya wa hirokute, kirei de, shizuka desu.) โ€œThis room is spacious, beautiful, and quiet.โ€
